Black Tiger
I set out to make a 60 second promotional trailer for a screenplay that I wrote, “The Black Tiger,” which was an homage to classic old school kung fu movies. I got access to a soundstage for one day and with a bunch of martial arts friends shot a few pages from the script, no sound, minimal production design. Later I decided I couldn’t use the footage because it looked too much like I had actually shot the entire movie (and on what looked to be a budget of two hundred dollars–not what I wanted at all.) I hated to throw it away, so instead, ignoring the original script, I subtitled it up, had some Cantonese speaking friends dub in dialogue, and viola “A Kung Fu Romance” was born.–Gordon Eriksen
